 | Mississippi’s Certificate of Need laws grant authority to the Department of Health to administer and supervise all state health planning and development responsibilities. This process places restrictions on certain health care activities in order to prevent unnecessary duplication of health resources and provide cost containment. The activities which require a certificate of need (CON) include the offering of certain designated health services, the development or establishment of new health care facilities, or the making of capital expenditures for health care projects in excess of designated limits. Free-market proponents are urging lawmakers to relax, update or remove these laws, claiming they are government barriers to patient care. This seminar will provide an overview of the CON process in Mississippi and differing views on its necessity. Panelists include attorneys Russ Latino, State Director of Americans for Prosperity and Richard Roberson, General Counsel for the Mississippi Hospital Association. | Formats Available: Health Law

 | The Child Advocacy Committee of The Mississippi Bar, The University of Mississippi Judicial College, The University of Mississippi School of Law and Mississippi College School of Law have produced a series of on-demand videos for purposes of certifying more guardians ad litem (GALs) to increase the number of available certified GALs and provide an affordable means for certification for solo practitioners and attorneys whose firms will not pay for the cost of certification.
Attorneys who view the GAL videos may utilize the training for both certification and CLE purposes. Attorneys may receive CLE credit only once for viewing the videos. Attorneys may, however, become re-certified for one additional year by viewing the videos a second time, but they will not receive any additional CLE credit for doing so.
For those attorneys who watched the previous version of the videos, you can receive certification and CLE credit for viewing the newly updated videos.
To obtain continuing legal education (CLE) credit and to become a certified GAL, you will need to download the Affidavit and CLE Form and print your Certificate of Completion after you submit credit for the course. Complete and mail both forms and the Certificate of Completion, along with $25 to The Mississippi Bar, Attn: Daniel Reed, P.O. Box 2168, Jackson, Mississippi 39225-2168. For additional information, please contact Daniel at dreed@msbar.org.
